FRICTIONLESS URBAN PAYMENTS

The challenge

Create a point-of-sale with frictionless payments for the urban people rushing from one place to another!

The cities of the future will be larger, and city life will be even more hectic. The metropolitan areas are filled with services ranging from self-service pizza kiosks to car/bicycle/hoverboard parking. The current solutions, like card and mobile phone payments, require too much attention from the busy citizen. Unless everything will be paid using targeted outdoor advertising, we need to have zero-friction payments in the streets.

What we’ll bring

Along with experienced mentors we’ll bring technology for building your propellerhead point-of-sale of the future.

The technology consists of Raspberry Pis, receivers, sensors and actuators to go with it. With the Raspberry Pi you can initially pick three widgets from our bag of toys, and exchange them later if you change your mind. Your team also gets an AWS account for utilizing Amazon’s AI-treats like Rekognition and Lex.

To kickstart your prototyping we’ll provide access to our Hilu payment system backend with pre-configured accounts and API access to charge and deposit to/from a Hilu account.

Extra details

As an example, the bag of toys contains RFID receivers with tags, servomotors, proximity sensors, webcams and microphones. We’ll provide working Python example code for all the gadgets, client code for the Hilu REST API and some AWS examples to get you started with the AI-stuff.  Also, there’ll be cardboard, tape and scissors for framing the prototype.

Problems of interest

Make a point-of-sale which accepts payments as frictionlessly as possible! We’re interested in out-of-the-box thinking and solutions which aren’t widely deployed yet.

Judging criteria

  1. Innovativeness – The solution should be cool and interesting
  2. Working prototype and a nicely prepared demo (go crazy with your secret acting skills!)
  3. Plan for securing the solution (the prototype doesn’t need to be secure)

INNOVATIVE APPLICATIONS WITH BLUETOOTH® MESH

The challenge

Bluetooth® Mesh networking creates new opportunities for interacting with your environment, whether you’re making your home or office smarter using intelligent lighting, heating/cooling, and security systems, or wireless sensor networks.

The challenge includes creating an application, on IoT edge gateway, which is communicating and utilizing the capabilities of Bluetooth® Mesh network devices. Examples of such applications could be messaging boards, smart badge system or sensor data collection system.

  • Bluetooth® Mesh Devices with pre-installed software and Bluetooth® profiles

Problems of interest

Bluetooth® mesh is new technology. The devices and software stacks we are using are on the bleeding edge of the development. We want to understand how mature the APIs, tools and modules are for real world application development. We are really interested in seeing innovative use of this technology already today.

MASTERING MY DATA

The challenge

Data has become the most valuable natural resource. Imagine a situation where all the data in the world would be available for innovative service designers and bright tech-gurus. Imagine a situation where you as a customer could have access to tailor-made, personalised service offerings which have harnessed all your digital data. This is what Sitra, the Finnish Innovation Fund, a think-and-do-tank, wants to try out in its challenge.

We challenge you to

  • explore and design totally new services
  • design a concept / service design that sets off with easy authorization, brings personalized feeling, utilizes data from different sources and redefines how users experience personalized services
  • build a demo of that service and UI

We won’t bring you ready data sets or technology. You can get creative and figure out the preferences and desires of the user yourself. And you don’t have to actually get the data for real, your demo only needs to show it could happen.

You can be as visionary as you wish, as long as your solution includes a human-centric permission process and the user is at all times the master of his/her data. Go crazy, and mix-and-match different data! Help us imagine tomorrow’s world!

What we’ll bring

Our experts will be there to explain our vision of how data could be utilised to inspire you. We will also bring a Concept Specialist and a Blockchain Specialist to advice and mentor you as much as you may need.

What you design and create is totally up to you. We encourage you to utilize several types of imaginary data: you could design e.g. an online diet service which creates a perfect diet based on personal data from a heart rate app, take-away food app and grocery store purchases. Or you could design a relaxation app which reads users stress levels using a under the skin sensor and combines it with data from environment and proposes the user to skip the next meeting and instead go for a latte in the next coffee shop because they are on sale.

By using several imaginary data sources, you bring out the importance of a simple user authorization and permission process to the user, as well as the customer experience which is key in successful digital services. Read more about Sitra’s human-driven data economy project.

Judging criteria

We will focus on the following criteria:

  • Usability including easy and clear permission process for data access
  • Originality and innovativeness of the idea
  • Creativity in combining data sources together
  • Nice front-end UI

Prizes

We encourage co-operation with other teams. All members of the winner team will get 300 euros gift card to Amazon, second team members will get 200 euros and third team will get 100 euros each.  However, there will be surprise price for all teams working with this challenge, because it might be the service that we valuate the least that will finally change the world and we want to remunerate your hard work.

Sitra aims to make Finland succeed as a pioneer of human-driven data economy by building an ecosystem for a fair data economy, together with citizens and different organizations.

Together with citizens, businesses and other stakeholders, Sitra’s project IHAN® aims to establish an ecosystem for a fair and functioning data economy.  The main objectives are to create a method for data exchange and set up European level rules and guidelines for ethical use of data.

TEACH EV CHARGERS NEW TRICKS

The challenge

Car charging can be much more than just plugging a car and filling the battery. Cars are charged in homes, workplaces, hotels, shopping malls, car parks and airports, to just mention a few, and in all these places the user may have different needs. Create the best possible car charging experience for the electric car driver on one or more segments. Implement/demo this solution utilizing Ensto’s platform offered REST API and additional functionality developed on top of the provided development boards. You can also utilize the already collected IoT data from our backend service for your solution.

What we’ll bring

Ensto will provide a platform with REST/JSON base API to control the EV Charging station and access the stations history data. We will also provide actual charging stations to test the solutions. Our EV Charging experts will also be there to mentor the teams.

We will bring also stack of development boards and IO modules to integrate with e.g cameras, weather, movement, audio and other sensors to be part of your solution.

Extra details

Car charging may still be free at places like shopping malls that want to attract customers. This will surely change in the future, and also segments such as hotels, car parks and airports are likely to be invoicing their customers for energy use. Try to also incorporate external  data sources to your solutions (e.g. electric pricing, weather forecasts, etc.)

Problems of interest

  • Can the experience for the end customer (EV Driver) be improved by integrate and command it through the management APIs? Can a separate device be mounted next to the device to avoid direct need to change the initial product but to control it through the higher level APIs?
  • How can other data sources be incorporated to benefit the end user in this scenario?

Judging criteria

We value new out of the box ideas on how to take something that might already be installed to a parking lot, and providing a new innovative approach to utilizing it.

Incorporating different sources of data to the solutions will be recognised.

SMOOTH OPERATOR

The challenge

John and Jane are process operators working in a remote factory away from the big city lights. The process is mostly automated but human presence is still needed for monitoring that the process goes smooth and to quickly react in case something unexpected happens. John and Jane are sitting in a cozy, air conditioned control room and currently working for the third night in a row. As usual, information flickers across the screen with occasional alarms blinking in displays like lights in a Christmas tree, but apart from that John and Jane feel sleepy and bored. Losing focus can be dangerous and according to studies 70 % of often very costly failures are caused by a human error. How can you make John’s and Jane’s work more exciting, engaging and smoother by using gamification/UX/AR/VR/AI/younameit methods?

We value that you can surprise us by proposing new ways to operate a process. The winning solution (an idea, concept or a working prototype) would probably have something we have never thought of but it is still realistic enough that we can actually implement in the not-so-distant future.

I HEAR VOICES IN MY FACTORY

The challenge

There is a factory, far far away from Junction, producing valuable metals to meet our everyday needs. This is a complex process requiring tremendous amounts of energy and blistering temperatures in which things can go wrong with the potential of damage to people and equipment. Based on the provided audio and motion data and failure events, can you diagnose how the factory operates and predict future failures, or prevent them? Can you visualise the data so that it speaks to the operators to help guide them safely? We do not know if there is even any correlation between the data and failures (in theory there should be), so we value a good try and clever new ways for digesting and visualising the data. Make the factory a safer place to work!

What we’ll bring

  • Raw (WAV) and pre-processed (CSV) audio data and motion data  (JSON).
  • Mentors for describing factory and process conditions.

Problems of interest

  • Is there any correlation between the data and the failures?
  • How to analyse and visualise this kind of data?

Judging criteria

The ideal solution would be able to predict failures with some degree of accuracy.. If that is not possible, we also value finding that there is no correlation between data and failure events. Also we like to see how to analyse and visualise this kind of data.
